NamcoBandai Games: Gamescom Round-Up

Gamescom is over and with that there was a lull in gaming news over the weekend, apologies for that, but as September get's nearer we should have a influx of beta's, demo's and releases. Battlefield 3 beta and Star Wars the Old Republic beta's are both slated to start in September, I'm quite excited about both of those. NamcoBandai Games is responsible for some promising games, some of which we got to play at E3, like Ace Combat Assault Horizon and Dark Souls. To start off the work week, here is a lowdown of Dark Souls, Ace Combat Assault Horzion and Soulcalibur V, the three main games they showed off at Gamescom. For each game I will give a brief overview, release date and platform information.

Dark Souls
Dark Souls is the successor to the game Demon Souls. Demon Souls was a PS3 exclusive that was known for being brutally difficult, unforgiving, but addicting and rewarding. It was an action adventure game with a third person perspective in a fantasy setting, no elves or anything like that, but it had dragons and various monsters/demons. It had a multiplayer system that only allowed players to interact by leaving each other messages around the world and it also gave the option for players to invade other players worlds in an attempt to kill them for experience (souls). Dark Souls seems to be keeping many of the mechanics of Demon Souls, yet still adding new things and improving upon their original designs. The worlds will be more open than Demon Souls was, by giving players a continuous world to explore instead of selecting individual levels. One of the most notable new features are campfires, which will allow you to pretend your safe. Campfires let you rest and modify your character, but they've made other aspects of the game more difficult in order to compensate for this user friendly feature. Online mode, at least at E3, looked exactly the same as Dark Souls, but they've haven't shown it off much. Demon Souls was a dark and horribly enjoyable game, but you definitely needed patience to play it and it looks like Dark Souls will be the same. We have two trailers for Dark Souls from Gamescom, so check them out.
Release Date: October 4th, 2011

Ace Combat Assault Horizon
Ace Combat Assault Horizon is a new game in the Ace Combat series and it is the first Ace Combat game to have helicopter combat as well as fighter planes. All of the Ace Combats are based on modern scenarios and Assault Horizon is no exception. Ace Combat tends to go more towards exciting and enjoyable, then realistic and non-user friendly. We got to play Assault Horizon at E3, helicopter and plane combat, and it was a really enjoyable experience. Neither of us have ever been much into air warfare sim games, but helicopter combat changed up the mechanics a bit and made the genre feel fresh. They have also added, to plane combat, a dog fighting mode that makes locking onto a single target very easy. It damn near auto guides your plane as you fight one particular enemy, so all you have to worry about is keeping up with the enemy plane and destroying him. All the features we saw make me believe that hardcore players will be upset with the user-friendly options, but for all the people out there who don't usually go for these kind of games, this one may prove to be a exception. Running down an enemy plane in the dogfight mode was pretty damn fun and I'd love to see a demo popping up for this game sometime in September. There is a possibility of multiplayer and a cooperative mode, but they still haven't gone into any details on it yet (surprisingly). One only trailer for this, but it's a pretty great looking trailer, take a gander.

Soulcalibur V
Soulcalibur V takes place seventeen years after Soulcalibur IV and it adds new warriors, while also having plenty of old favorites returning. Soulcalibur is a fighting game, the most notable games of the series were Soulcalibur (dreamcast) and Soulcalibur 2 (playstation 2, xbox and gamecube). Soulcalibur three and four tried really hard to recapature the magic and draw of the first two games, which neither succeeded in doing, but they did still keep a fairly decent following. We didn't get to see Soulcalibur V at E3, but I'm always excited for the any Soulcalibur game. Especially since Adam and I both used to play Soulcalibur 2 every day for months back in high school, but neither of us have been too thrilled with the last two games. One of the main characters, that they haven't confirmed for a return, is the crazy/awesome Yoshimitsu. Soulcalibur V doesn't look particularly ground breaking for the genre, but maybe that's not something that they need to do in order to get the game to be fun and addicting again. One of the new features it adds is the Critical Edge. It is a gauge, similiar to other fighting games, that fills up when you deal damage to another character and when its full you can perform a special action. Critical Edge is different from other special moves in other fighting games, because the special move flows with the combat, instead of stopping it. The Gamescom trailer doesn't show anything to exciting, mainly story and a little gameplay, but hopefully we will see some of the most important details popping up before 2012 roles around. Here is the trailer, one minute long only, be back with more information on this game when it arrives.
