Wing Commander Saga Release

Fans of Wing Commander or Freespace 2 should immediately take note of Wing Commander Saga (WCS), it is a free standalone PC game that uses the Freespace 2 engine to re-imagine a new Wing Commander. The developers have been making WCS for a very long time and they have created something massive. They have created the Wing Commander universe and filled it to the brim with content. If you've played any of the Wing Commander games you should feel right at home in this universe, especially since the story starts before Wing Commander 3 and is very impressive sounding. Before I go through what will be included in their upcoming release, The Darkest Dawn, I want to say this game will be released on March 22nd, three days from now, and will be entirely free and entirely standalone, meaning you don't need to own any particular game or software in order to play it. Read on for a full list of features, gameplay videos and more. First off, take a look at the new release trailer.

Sure the game isn't the best looking game out there, but like I said before if you want content and seemingly exciting space battles then Wing Commander Saga has got it. While the above trailer does go over many of the features here is a full list for anyone who wants to see them written out, straight from the WCS website.

-Epic Storyline that complements, not contradict, the events portrayed by the Wing Commander 3 game and novel.
-Presence of other Confederation carrier battle groups and fighter squadrons gives large-scale “teamwork” -environment – the Hermes does not fight the war alone
-Over nine hours of voice dialogue.
-Approximately 70 cut scenes for a total of about 90 minutes of pre-rendered footage (not counting in-flight communications and command briefings).
-Over 60 voice actors, some of whom are actual professionals.
-221 voice acting roles.
-55 missions.
-Achievements (mission performance is evaluated and rewarded)
-90 models created for Saga.
-Download size of 3-4GB with an installation size of 8-9 GB

For a fan made project this project is huge and a great accomplishment for the team. I encourage any fan Freespace, Tie-Fighter or any space combat simulator to check it out when it comes out for free in three days. The previous trailer showed off very little in-game combat or anything in-game, so here is one of their raw gameplay videos to show off some slightly dated, a year ago, footage of the game in motion.

If you want to learn more abotu the game there is plenty of information available on the main website, even if all you want is Wing Commander lore or to learn how the game matches up with the original stories. Very rarely do we see projects like this actually come to fruition and I do hope the developers, and game, receive the praise it deserves. Thank you for reading and I have quite a lot to write about today so keep your eyes peeled.
