I've never written about DUST 514 here, likely because I thought that the games premise was far too ambitious to actually be fun or exciting, especially since it's free to play, but CCP Games is starting to make me reconsider. DUST 514 is a F2P First Person Shooter that takes place in the universe of Eve, the space MMO. It is set to come out only on PS3, oddly enough, and it will have some interactions between the people playing Eve Online and DUST 514. Specifically Eve Online players will be able to do planetary bombardments on locations that players in DUST 514 will be battling over. The Eve universe will be interconnected in a way that each game can affect the other game and it will be very interesting to see how that works out. Before I talk about it anymore, or the beta, check out this video from the Keynote presentation that CCP did back in March. It is from the Eve Online Fanfest 2012. Skip to 20 minutes in to see orbital bombardment from the view of each respective game.
Go to 20:00 if you want to see how the two games connect
So if you didn't watch all thirty-three minutes of that you probably don't know a ton about how the FPS aspects of the game work out. Your soldier is persistent, just like any modern FPS, and through fighting and dying you develop your skills. Your soldier will be highly customizable and the skills work a little bit different than most other games. They have a little bit of the Eve Online skill system in here, meaning you can still learn skills when you are offline. You earn skill points and when you invest those into skills it looks as if it will take quite a while, just like Eve Online, to learn that skill. I should also mention that the FPS combat isn't just infantry combat. There are also plenty of vehicles available to destroy your enemies with.
Now for information on the beta. Previously you could only be in the beta if you were selected from the Eve Online playerbase, but now they are accepting anyone. The beta is of course on the PS3 only and if you own Eve Online or attended the Eve Online Fanfest 2012 then you get priority over the rest of us. All you need is an email address to sign up so head on over to this page to read about it and sign up. I really hope they bring this game to PC at some point and they may have to if they don't find enough players interested in it for the PS3. The majority of their fanbase are desktop gamers so of course it would make sense to bring this game there, but they do not have any plans to do so. If you would like to read more about the game check out the links below and thanks for reading.
